SEC Ltd (SEC) is aware of the potential impact that the events staged at the Scottish Exhibition + Conference Centre (SECC) can have on the environment. We are committed to further growth and development of our events, exhibitions, conference business and intend to pursue this objective whilst operating the venue, wherever possible, in an environmentally sustainable way.

SECC Environmental Policy - Key Points

SECC recognises our responsibilities in promoting best practice among clients, contractors, staff and suppliers. We shall therefore consult with our business partners, government agencies and industry associations to develop and adopt more environmentally friendly policies.  As a minimum, SECC will comply, whist aiming to surpass, the relevant legal requirements with the objective of gaining formal accreditation. This will be achieved by:

  • Collaborating with business partners and clients to achieve commitment and support in maintaining environmentally sustainable practices.
  • Creating a database of preferred suppliers who maintain a strong and proactive environmental policy.
  • Encouraging other organisations such as Glasgow City Marketing Bureau, hoteliers and restaurateurs to adopt similar policies to project Glasgow as an environmentally friendly business destination.
  • Training of contractors and staff to raise their understanding of their personal responsibilities and heighten environmental awareness.
  • Reduce the amount of packaging and potential waste on goods supplied to SECC.
  • Reducing the amount of paper and using recycled paper for all office requirements and promotional activities.
  • Develop and sustain recycling paths wherever possible.
  • Use environmentally friendly or fully biodegradable materials for cleaning and laundry.
  • Making use of best available techniques not exceeding excessive costs to reduce waste and improve efficiency.
  • Reducing the amount of waste sent to landfill.
  • Introduce water saving measures in all washrooms in the Centre.
  • Work with the Carbon Trust to assess and reduce SECC’s carbon footprint.
  • Minimising energy wastage by becoming more energy efficient.
  • Using electricity generated only by renewable sources.
  • Maintaining machinery and plant to the highest standards ensure optimum operating efficiency.
  • Replacing old plant with more efficient types as soon as practicable.
  • Reviewing emerging technologies to ascertain how further improvements can be made.
  • In association with the local authority and transport providers develop as green transport policy and encourage public use of public transport when visiting SECC.
  • Setting up a ‘Cycle to Work Scheme’ allowing staff to buy a cycle end related safety equipment at reduced cost.
  • Specifying that all timber used by SECC comes for sustainable or managed forests.
  • Continually reviewing and updating our environmental performance.

Trees for Life

SECC also supports, ‘Trees for life’, the conservations charity dedicated to the restoration and regeneration of the Caledonian Forest in the Highlands of Scotland. For every major conference staged at the Centre, SECC will sponsor the planting of one acre of native trees, for smaller events, a grove of eight trees will be sponsored. The objective is to link up several fragments of the Caledonian Forest and re-establish a forest corridor from Glen Moriston to Glen Affric in the North thereby creating a continuous stretch of native woodland.
